If you're having trouble signing in to your myGov account, you might be able to recover it using the myID app. You can also try logging in with a passkey, if you've set one up before.

First up - do you have the myID app?

To recover your myGov account with myID, you’ll need to have the app installed and set up with a Strong identity strength.

If you’ve got a Strong myID, you may need to update your details to ensure your name, date of birth and email address match those used in your myGov account.

If you don't have the myID app, follow these steps to download it and set up a Strong myID. Remember to make sure your name, date of birth and email match your myGov account details.

Recover your account using myID

To recover your myGov account, you’ll need to set up the myID app (formerly myGovID) to a Strong identity strength.

Your name, date of birth and email address in your myGov account need to match the details you use to set up your myID.

To recover your account:

  • go to the myGov sign in page

  • enter your username and password

  • select the link - I didn’t get my code, I can't access my app or I can't answer my question

  • select Continue with Digital ID

  • select myID as your identity provider

  • enter your myID email address – a 4-digit code will appear onscreen

  • log into your myID app and enter the 4-digit code

  • follow the prompts to sign in to myGov.

Next time you want to log in to myGov, all you have to do is select Sign in with Digital ID. It's as easy as that!

Can’t recover your account using myID?

You need a strong myID to recover your account. If you can't set one up, then you’ll need to create a new myGov account and relink it to the ATO instead. You can use a different email address when creating your new account. If you want to use the same email, you’ll need to contact the myGov helpdesk so they can release it.

Need to access myGov from overseas?

It's best to update your myGov sign in options before you travel. If you're already overseas, you may still be able to recover your account using myID. Our guide has everything you need to know on how to access myGov and ATO online services from overseas.

Having issues logging in to ATO online services?

When you use your Strong myID to access ATO online services, it sets your ATO online access strength. Since it's the most secure option, you'll need to keep using your Strong myID to sign in from now on.

I have mygov on computer as well as phone. Erroneously I logged into mygov on phone with wrong pin and was locked out. I could use myid (strong)on my phone to get code, but I still got RMFA error. I changed password successfully, but I then had to sign on again and error was back. As I also have mygov on website. I tried to change password. While it was changed successfully, I still could not get into mygov on phone. A blue screen for new pin kept coming up and I had to sign in again. In the end I found that I had to enable password on website (it stated that usually password is not used for logon, but I enabled it). I was then able to obtain new password successfully and no more RFMA error. I then could use myid again to log into mygov digitally on my phone (by the way, helpline told me that I had to delete mygov and reinstall, which I did not want to do), so I decided to try myself to find a better solution.

Hi,

I'm trying to login to the ATO through my gov, although it keeps saying I don't have enough security level.

I've signed in all 3 ways available (Normal sign in, Digital ID sign in & passkey) and it still says I don't have the right amount of security?

Yet there is no other possible way for me to sign into my gov?

How or who do I contact to fix this error?

Note: I don't have a passport so I cannot update my "My ID" any further (I've got my license and birth certificate already linked)

I can't increase my password strength in My ID as it rejects both my new and former passport details and my now expired drivers licence. I live overseas. What are my options?
